Description

The thistle (Cirsium neomexicanum), also known by its Spanish name, cardo santo, is a common plant found in the disturbed grasslands and yards of Southeastern Arizona. Though universally labeled as a noxious weed, it has medicinal value and is a valued food source for butterflies, hummingbirds, finches, and other small birds.

Close inspection of a blooming thistle will reveal a beautiful flower. Its cup-shaped green involucre, which subtends the flower-heads, has the look of reptilian scales. Feathery petals eventually burst through its top, standing protectively around an inner flower core which finally expands into a colorful fuzzy dome of pinks or purples.
