Calcite Springs is a colorful hydrothermal feature below Bumpus Butte, just downstream of The Narrows on the Yellowstone River, close to the Tower General Store. The springs are named after the milky-white calcite that dominates the area.

The honey-color of translucent barite crystals are mixed in with the calcite. Black areas can also be seen, sometimes oozing like slow molasses. These are a mixture of oil and molten sulfur, which are hard to visually differentiate from each other for the sulfur turns as black as oil when it exits the superheated vent and comes into contact with the air.
