Description

Despite the brutal Winters in Jackson Hole, J. Pierce Cunningham settled here with his wife Margaret in the 1880s. This particular cabin was their home from 1888 to 1895. After their ranch house was completed they used the cabin as a barn and smithy.

Though originally opposed to the idea of a the area becoming a national park, he was later instrumental in obtaining the signatures of 97 fellow valley ranchers to agree to sell their land to form a "national recreation area."

"The destiny of Jackson's Hole is as a playground, typical of the West, for the education and enjoyment of the Nation, as a whole." --J. Pierce Cunningham

The abovel text is paraphrased from the National Park Service plaque in front of the Cunningham Cabin.
