The transition between bleak lava coastline to wet jungle is quite sudden when driving up the West coast of the Big Island in Hawaii. The Akoni Pule Highway stops suddenly at the Pololu Valley Lookout, and this is the view you see from there.
There's a very small parking area here, from which you can enjoy the scenery, providing you can find a place to park. You can also take a rather steep trail down to the beach. Unfortunately, the trail was closed due to rock slides caused by recent seismic activity, though we noted that little detail didn't stop several people from going down the trail any way.
