I was spending an early morning at Whitewater Draw Wildife Area, outside of McNeal in Southeastern Arizona. I had the place to myself and was marvelling at the number of egrets and herons that were there.
I wanted to practice my panning technique and I was shooting anything that flew overhead, which was a lot, when this solitary bird flew by.
I didn't recognize the shape, but I knew that down-turned beak indicated it might be some kind of ibis. Later on, several more flew overhead, and then later still a dozen more flew by. They must have been enroute to somewhere else for I never saw them land.
It wasn't until I got home and started culling my images that I saw the emerald green wings and realized that it was a bird I'd never seen before, a White-faced ibis (Plegadis chihi) which really made my morning!
