I was making images of yellow-headed blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) on a rather gloomy morning at the waste water wetlands inside of our local Environmental Operations Park (gotta love the names they come up with for these places). I wasn't having much luck in capturing anything decent because my lens just didn't have enough reach. Still, I enjoyed watching the interactions of the flock and how they coped with a persistent hawk that kept trying to snag a bird or two.
During a lull in the action I turned around to see what was going on behind me. The Huachuca Mountains were completely obscured by clouds, except for snow-covered Carr Peak. Lucky me! That long lens that wasn't long enough for the blackbirds was just perfect for framing Carr Peak poking out of the clouds.
